WTF Just Happened Today?

Cool Stuff!, FYI: Knowledge is Power, Uncategorized

Staying sane in the US given the whirlwind of insanity spewing out of our 24 hour new cycle is hard. This website has been very helpful  in filtering out all of the drama and spin in the news and breaking it down to the facts of the major news stories of the day, their supporting articles and most importantly the Facts. Actual facts not alternative ones minus the drama and celebrity gossip. Just the stories accurately documenting the daily shock & awe.

I hope it helps you too.

Dredd Retrospective Review – Oliver Harper (Spoilers)

Cool Stuff!, film

I discovered Oliver Harper’s Retrospectives last year, he provides really great insights into many of my favorite movies. He dives deep into every aspect from the production, through the marketing, to a review and breakdown of the films successes and failures.

I thought Dredd was fantastic, if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. It deserved to be more successful that it was, and if it had gotten more effective marketing and a wider 2D release it probably would have done much better. I have hopes that the Netflix / Amazon series rumors pan out, as I think it would be the best possible format for the character and would go a long way to expanding the audience for him.

Hot DAMN! The Atomic Blonde Trailer is Off the CHAIN!

Cool Stuff!, film, Uncategorized

I’m sold, sign me up I can’t wait to see this. It’s being done by the same team behind John Wick…and I have to say I love this new Action renaissance that is going on lately. I’m so over the frenetic jump cuts that don’t let you see anything. Bring on the BALLET OF DEATH!

Just a few of my favorite bands.

Cool Stuff!, Music

My musical taste is fairly eclectic but always heavily influenced by rock, I was listening to AC/DC when I was 5, I was also introduced to Hip-Hop as it was being born around the same time. I lived in Michigan not too far from Detroit and I remember Break-dancers coming and doing a demonstration presentation at my school in 2nd grade. I discovered Heavy Metal a few years later due to the influence of my cooler older cousins, and fell in love with Iron Maiden & Ozzy Osbourne. Later I moved to punk, when I found some bands that really spoke to my experiences and outcast status as a teenager.

Anyways here are some of the bands that always have a spot in the rotation in the car or while I am working. I may do some posts with deeper dives on some of them if I feel the inspiration. Enjoy.

Fair To Midland, were an astonishingly good prog rock act out of Texas that I discovered at the beginning of last year. Their sound pretty much presses every happy button in my skull. I adore them and was saddened to find out that they are now defunct.

Anakin – Are a shoe-gaze band I discovered a few years ago now, I find them to be very relaxing to listen to. It’s great working music. I really like the keyboard melodies they weave through their songs.

P.O.S – P.O.S is pretty much my favorite rapper these days. I find his style amazing and his flow is intelligent and thought provoking. Fun Fact, he started as a Drummer in a punk band, Building Better Bombs,  which he is still a part of although he has had more greater success as a rapper.

Cunninlynguists – Psychedelic hip- hop, their album Oneirology is one of my favorite chill out jams.

letlive. – letlive. are post hardcore band that are known for their intense and bombastic live shows. they just put out a new album that is a bit more mellow than their earlier work, perhaps trying to reach a larger audience. I love their singer, he is explosive and has a virtuosic voice.

To be continued… This post is taking much longer to put together than i thought, so I think I’m going to break it up into a series of them.

DUCK TALES WOO HOO!

Animation, Cool Stuff!, Random Musings

I really almost can’t explain how happy this makes me, Duck Tales was one of the truly great cartoons of my childhood and it still holds up remarkably well today. I love that a whole new generation is going to get to fall in love with these characters too. The new voice cast is amazing, and I love that they have finally given each of the nephews truly distinct voices and personalities this time. Also David Tennant as Scrooge is genius!

Take a look at the first trailer below.

Animating Light – Akira

Animation, Cool Stuff!, FYI: Knowledge is Power

When I went to school for 3D Animation, lighting was one of my worst areas so I focused on my strengths of Character Modeling & Animation. This video I recently found gives a fantastic breakdown on the power of light in animation and why understanding how it works is so important, it just so happens to use one of my favorite films of all time as it’s example.

Sharing a personal cause of mine here…

Cool Stuff!, Music, Random Musings

I’m a bit of a music nut so, when I find awesome music, I want to share it with as many people as I can. So my cause in this instance being to letting you all know about this movie ” A Band Called Death” that just recently came out. Death, was a nearly forgotten hard rock band, from Detroit in the early 70’s.

The three Hackney brothers were light years ahead of their time, having discovered a sound that was unlike any other. They recorded most of an album and after turning down a record contract that was contingent on them changing their name they ran into a wall of refusal. Three Black Guys from Detroit playing Hard rock that was anything but Motown and, oh yea, they are NAMED DEATH…with the rise of disco never they got their record deal. I’m saving the best twist for the trailer. Give it a look and give the album a listen, Their Story is so good, you couldn’t have made it up if you tried.

I hope you enjoy discovering this amazing little piece of rock history as much as i did…
